Boroondara General Cemetery

From Boroondara Wiki

Boroondara General Cemetery, also known as Kew Cemetery and Boroondara Cemetery, is a burial ground located in the suburb of Kew. It remains the only cemetery within the City of Boroondara.

History

Land was reserved for a cemetery in 1855. The facilities were constructed in 1858 with Ellen Quick being the first person to be buried in its grounds.[1]

With construction of the cable tram from the city and along Victoria Street to the Yarra River in 1886, a horse tram connecting Kew Cemetery to the cable tram terminus was built and opened in 1887.[2] This became an attraction in its own right due to the opulence of some of the graves - in particular the Springthorpe Memorial which stands to this day.

Many expansions and additions to the cemetery were built as Boroondara rapidly expanded. This has included rose gardens, service buildings and a mausoleum.[1]
