Maylands Avenue is a minor street running east-west between Burke Road and Severn Street in the suburb of North Balwyn.

Etymology

Named for the Chas Mayland, a local farmer who owned property on Bulleen Road and Burke Road nearby.[1]

History

Maylands Avenue was originally Mayland Avenue when it was officially designated. It was created as one seven new streets created as part of the Tramway Estate in 1913, along with Nicholson Street, Hatfield Street, Corhampton Road, Aylmer Street, Severn Street and part of Maud Street. It took until the late 1930s before most of the allotments were developed, mainly due to the slow construction of the electric tram along High Street and Doncaster Road.[2]

Notable buildings

  • 10-10a Maylands Avenue - heritage maisonette houses built in the 1930s.[2]
  • 12 Maylands Avenue - noted for being constructed in 1952 to a design by an unnamed Swedish architect.[2]
