Patrick Doherty noticed one train approaching and stepping onto the other track, not seeing another train moving in the opposite direction. He was struck by the engine and dragged along the railway.[3] |
1 July 1889 | 1 | 0 | William Street level crossing between Auburn and Camberwell Stations, Hawthorn East | Ringwood Line | 51-year old Mabel Meredith was attempting to cross the railway but was not seen by the gatekeeper of the level crossing. An up train from Lilydale to Melbourne then struck and killed her.[4] |

14 August 1914 | 1 | 1 | Whitehorse Road level crossing, Deepdene | Outer Circle Line | A car driving west along Whitehorse Road crossed the unprotected level crossing while a train was approaching. The train struck the car, dragging it several hundred metres, killing the driver and injuring the passenger.[6] |
4 August 1923 | 0 | 4 | Whitehorse Road level crossing, Deepdene | Outer Circle Line | A train heading north struck a tram heading to Mont Albert at the unprotected level crossing on Whitehorse Road. The tram was seriously damaged and returned to its depot for repairs. This was one of several crashes at this level crossing, leading to calls for safety improvements.[7][8] |
15 September 1923 | 0 | 6 | Camberwell railway station, Camberwell | Ringwood Line | An up train from Healesville was accidentally diverted down a siding at Camberwell Station, causing it run into an embankment. Signalling and miscommunication issues were later identified as the causes.[9][10][11] |
