BoroondaraWiki is a free, independent and open-source repository of historical information on topics relevant to the present-day area of Boroondara. This includes, but is not limited to, places, places and culture.

As an encyclopedia independent of any organisation or group and for the purposes of public information, it is important that everything is presented in an neutral and unbiased way. This means excluding any political, social or other biases that you may have as a BoroondaraWiki editor.

This can be a difficult task. Recognising one's own bias can be hard, which is why the best resource to rectify that is already available here - other people. If you are unsure if what you have written is impartial, ask another user to read over it first by saving it in your user sandbox.

Another good way is to ensure that as much information as possible is backed up by relevant and reliable sources. This may not always be possible but it can help to filter out biased language.

One final principle to keep in mind when considering impartiality is that BoroondaraWiki is a site to store and publish objective facts and information and not analysis or comment. People may do what they wish with this information, subject to the content license, but the primary function of this website is not to provide judgement or comment.

Freedom of information

Unless otherwise stated, BoroondaraWiki operates under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. This has been chosen deliberately to ensure that information is open and accessible. Consider the stated purpose of the Creative Commons project:

"Creative Commons helps you legally share your knowledge and creativity to build a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world. We unlock the full potential of the internet to drive a new era of development, growth and productivity."

History is a resource that benefits everybody. Learning about the past, in particular your local area, is something that should not be unreasonably restricted. This is part of the reason for BoroondaraWiki's existence.

There is little point in disseminating information unless it is correct. While a degree of historical revisionism may be acceptable under some circumstances, the primary purpose of this wiki is to collate and present factual information in an accessible way. Going to appropriate lengths to ensure that contributed information is accurate is an expectation of all users.

However, it should be recognised that it may not be possible or even desirable to reference every single piece of information. Any exceptional, controversial or contradictory contributions should be referenced. Any other contributions may also be referenced from reasonable and reliable sources.

For more on researching and referencing, see the 'Getting Started' guide.
