Named for the [[wikipedia:River Severn|River Severn]] in the [[wikipedia:United Kingdom|United Kingdom]]. It was originally named Grenville St for [[wikipedia:William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville|the British Foreign Secretary of the same name]] until the late 1920s when Gildan Street was constructed and a connection made through to [[Belmore Road]].<ref name="McWilliamsNames">McWilliam, G. Severn Street was built as one seven new streets created as part of the [[Tramway Estate]] in 1913, along with [[Nicholson Street]], [[Hatfield Street]], [[Corhampton Road]], [[Aylmer Street]], [[Maylands Avenue]] and part of [[Maud Street]]. It took until the late 1930s before most of the allotments were developed, mainly due to the slow construction of the electric tram along [[High Street (Kew)|High Street]] and Doncaster Road.<ref name="BalwynNorthBalwynHeritageStudy">City of Boroondara.
