The Gardens were named for the governor of [[wikipedia:Victoria (Australia)|Victoria]] of the time, Viscount Canterbury.

== History ==
Canterbury Gardens were formally created as public space in 1903 when the [[Shire of Boroondara]] purchased the land from private owners. The [[Canterbury Library]], then located on the opposite side of Canterbury Road, was moved to a new building within the Gardens in March 1907.<ref>Copland, Luba. [[W Creek|W (or West) Creek]] formerly flowed at the lowest point of the site, but was re-routed underground at an unknown date.<ref name="BorPopularGardens" />
