Upon the announcement of John Maling's intention to retire at the 1916 election, two local notables publicly declared their intentions to run. James Sneddon, a local [[wikipedia:Justice of the peace|Justice of the Peace]], published advertisements in several newspapers announcing his candidacy.<ref>[[Camberwell and Hawthorn Advertiser]].
